HIC Invests in the Future of its Community
What better night than the night of the Wiladat of the greatest lady in Islam, Bibi Fatima (AS).
On this auspicious night, the members of HIC met during a Special General Meeting and unanimously gave mandate to the Investment Plan (IP) Sub-Committee under the guidance of the Managing Committee and the Board of Trustees to actively look for investment properties, seek funds and purchase them.
During the meeting, Br. Riyaaz Jivraj elaborated the importance of this project, what impact it can have for the future of this community and how it can make the community self-sufficient in the years to come. With a pledge of a state-of-the-art Center being built and to be fully donated to HIC, the community will be faced with higher maintenance costs. Thus, building an income-generating investment portfolio will help with these costs as well as organizing special projects and events for the children, youths and adults.
On behalf of the IP Sub-Committee, Br. Raza Dhanji presented the goals and objectives of the Investment Plan and investment strategy. He then presented the first property that the IP Sub-Committee plans to purchase. He discussed the seed capital required and the income options that it will generate.
After further elaboration and very positive remarks by various members and with no objection the mandate was given to purchase the first property and actively seek further properties. Thus, history was made as members of HIC collectively approved to invest in the future of their community.
The IP Sub-Committee is very grateful to Birmingham Jamaat for their guidance on how they became successful in their investment ventures.

Report - Mini Golf & Smoking Prevention Outing
The primary goal of the Education Committee is to prepare for the various physical, spiritual, emotional, and psychological challenges faced in our community today. Our objective is to educate and train our members and provide various resources on issues that will facilitate their future.
The HIC Education Committee recently held an event for children aged 11-17 at the Congo River Miniature Golf in Altamonte Springs on Sunday, May 16th, 2010.The discussion was led by sister Tasnim Jagani who presented the risks and effects of smoking. The program was aimed towards our youths. The lecture was very enlightening and stimulating and included fun activities for the children as well as short video clips. The event was attended by a diverse group of 12 children a mix of boys and girls. The discussion allowed the children an opportunity to raise any questions they had and get the maximum information out of the class. The children thoroughly enjoyed their food while listening and participating in the session.
Overall, the class was a huge success and left everyone satisfied in what they had learned. The event would not be possible without the combined efforts of all the chaperones and all committee members. A special thanks to them all!
Below are some of the comments of participants:
"I thought it was fun and educational as we got to play golf as well learn about the risk of smoking. I think if the committee did more programs like this more and more people will come and it would be a really big event. I loved it."

Report - Special Workshop with Dr. Liakat Takim
On Sunday April 18th, 2010, the HIC Youths of Orlando hosted a Workshop at the Center with Dr. Liyakat Takim; a guest speaker from Hamilton, Canada. Alhamdulillah, the workshop was quite a success with over 60 participants.
The day began at 10:45 AM with refreshments and then with the recitation of Qur'an by Br. Mujahid Jaffer. Dr. Liyakat Takim then addressed the participants with his first topic; Islam in Modern Times. From over 1,000 years ago, to current day, Dr. Liyakat discussed how Islam impacted not only the Muslim World, but the role it played in promoting its message to neighboring countries, and those who promoted Islam in every corner of the world.
At 1:15 PM, we took a break for Salaat, and then resumed to begin the second workshop. The topic for the second workshop was 'Comparative Religions', in which Dr. Liyakat discussed the similarities and differences between Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. The Workshop Day ended at 4:15pm.
Dr. Liyakat Takim's latest book, 'Shi'ism in America', is available for sale for $30.00. If you are interested, please contact the HIC Youths at youths@orlandocenter.org.
We thank all those who attended and participated in the workshop.
No More Hunger Campaign Report
No More Hunger Campaign Report
On Friday March 26th, the youth of the Husseini Islamic Center in Orlando joined efforts with Muslim Congress in the "No More Hunger Campaign", a multi-faceted project aimed at charity, self-building, community-building, social justice, da'wah and outreach. Volunteers helped prepare halal meals at the Coalition for Homeless Orlando Center for women and families, serving approximately 240 individuals in need.
One of the youth at the event, Sameer Jagani, reflected on the event: "It gave everyone a chance to make a difference and help in a way that may have seemed small, but indeed very large to those in need. Moments like these make one truly appreciate and thank Allah for what we have and for being able to help in such efforts". May Allah (SWT) bless us with more of these events that allow us to give back to our communities and make a difference.
The Managing Committee of HIC would like to commend the HIC Youths for their efforts in this noble cause.
